Four and a half hours later, I finally emerged from Fernando’s private room with more than a couple of glasses of champagne in me and wearing a huge smile.

The little man had kept me entertained the whole time he worked on me, and he made sure I had the full spa experience. I was buffed, waxed, rubbed, and polished to a shine. Even my skin sparkled from some kind of shimmering body lotion they’d used on me. Sarah and Swan had done their own series of beauty treatments, but I’d kept in touch with them via text. They waited for me in the foyer, then we planned to meet with Smoke and their friend Tom at the steakhouse.

I had to admit, as I was ushered into the lush waiting area, I felt super nervous. Well, nervous and excited. Even if I was a tiny bit ashamed for my vain thoughts, I knew I looked amazing. Fernando was a magician with hair, and his very nice assistant had done a spectacular job on my makeup. Even better, she taught me how to do it myself, so I could replicate the look on my own.

Next to me, Fernando strutted as proud as a peacock as he escorted me, and the diamond embellishments on his boots sparkled with each stride he took.

He was such a nice man, and his kind words had done as much for my self-confidence as his stylist skills had done for my appearance.

The salon was crazy busy, but everyone took a moment to look our way as we passed. I kept my gaze straight ahead, hoping everyone didn’t notice how bad I was blushing. A pale pink curl briefly obscured my vision before I gently brushed it back with a smile. I loved my new hair.

Loved.

Fernando had trimmed the ends, but he left most of the length and added lots of graceful layers. He’d dyed the whole mass of my hair a lovely honey brown color, then put in thick sections of baby pink, robin’s egg blue, and lilac purple streaks. The colors were so pretty, and I loved feeling pretty because of them. I also adored the big, bouncy curls he’d arranged my hair into. With my perfect makeup and newly- painted finger and toenails, I felt like the girly girl I’d always wanted to be.

When I stepped into the foyer, I heard Sarah and Swan’s gasps of delight before I saw them.

“Oh. My. GOD!” Sarah screamed as she shot out of her chair, her eyes wide.

Swan gave a small, happy squeal and clapped her hands together as she beamed at me. “You look so…so…you look like a fairy princess!”

“Fernando,” Sarah gushed as she slowly walked toward us, her silver heels clicking on the floor. “Oh my God, you are amazing. I mean, Lyric has always been beautiful, but…wow. I can’t get over how much a different hairstyle can change you. I swear, you are going to stop traffic, girl.”

I laughed and blushed as Fernando gave me a one-armed hug while he said to Sarah, “Thank you, darling.
